What we'll be up to tomorrow.

Good Morning Ladies,

In honor of Halloween and the glorious costumes you all have been working on, I thought it would be fun to set up a portrait making station - similar to what we did for the open house.
For inspiration here are some examples of paintings and photographs that are stylistically different from the types of images we've been making during most of our meetings.

Pay attention to the texture of the background in the photos, where the light is coming from and the postures/eye contact of the models.

Reflect on how you will direct your model(s), what story you want to tell and what shooting in black and white will lend to the images.

We'll bring some props and costumes, but feel free to bring your own as well!

When you look at these images what are you reminded of? What effects do you want to integrate into the photos you'll make? What can you do in camera vs. in photoshop?

Thinking about Halloween.

Hey Ladies -
I just saw these posted on Feministing, by way of MotherJonesTumblr and thought they might be of interest to you. Take a look and tell me what you think!

Do you agree/disagree with the posters? Do they remind you of any of the discussions we've had in group or of other discussions you've had before? Have you seen any costumes that have made you upset/annoyed/surprised/confused?

PS. Tomorrow I'll make a post about what to expect on Monday.

On Media + Youth + Truths

Hey Ladies -

Here are some videos that tie into what we'll be discussing in group today. Think about how these pieces are similar and different.

The first one is from a protest to cut funding to schools in Chile using a flash mob and a commentary on the idea of the "zombie-fying" of education.

This second one is from the current Occupy Wall Street movement and was filmed on the Brooklyn Bridge. Pay attention to what the crowd is saying.

Talking About Beauty

Today we'll be talking about beauty: what is it?
Who decides what and who is beautiful?
How does beauty feel? How can the idea of beauty change and evolve?
What makes you feel beautiful?
To you who is beautiful and what about them creates that?
What do culture and society have to do with beauty?

It has been great to hear you talk about beauty in reference to some of the work we have looked at so far.

This photo (taken by Annie Liebovtiz)is one of great beauty to me - this women shows beauty in her strength, and confidence. If you have a chance to look up more of Liebovitz's work I think you'll like it.

On the topic of societal pressure - in particular the pressure for women to be thin, check out this project done by a recently deceased supermodel who wanted to speak out against anorexia in the modeling industry.

YAC Unity Event THIS FRIDAY!!!

Join us for YAC's 1st Unity Event for the new year. For the second year in a row, First Generation will be putting on a Performance Workshop centered around our theme, "Who are we the people?", at the Jones Library. If you came to this event last year, than you know just how incredible and fun it was. Here's some info on First Generation:

First Generation is an intensive, arts and youth leadership program in Springfield, MA that provides a platform for young people to have a public voice in their community, and beyond.

This promises to be a great event, and food will be provided. Please come, bring your other YAC friends, and be prepared to have a great experience!

The event will take place in the Jones Library in Amherst from 5-7pm.

Please RSVP to Mim (by e-mail or phone) or to Patrick at the YAC office: 413-253-2158 so that we can plan accordingly.

Oh, by the way........

We have a flickr account now.

Go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/gevware/  and sign in with the password (I'll give it to you this afternoon) and check out your fabulous work! Try to choose a photo of yours to edit and print  next week for the open house on Wednesday.

If photographer David Hillard (Link HERE) was a part of GEV I bet he'd print this photo for the open house!

What is Social Justice?

According to the Merriam Webster website Social Justice is:
a state or doctrine of egalitarianism <the causes of human freedom and of social justice — Sir Winston Churchill> <promote the common good and social justice — G.J.Schnepp>

But hey, look at this! Skilled artists/youth/students/sisters/friends working together to create a community contract, share artwork etc... I think that this is Social Justice.

Meet Our Interns!!! Learn about their artwork (and favorite ice creams flavor too)!

My name is Anna and this is my first year working with Girls Eye View, which
I’m really excited about! I study studio art and photography at UMass Amherst. I love
surreal and abstract photography. Some photographers that I look to for inspiration are
Man Ray, Sally Mann, Abelardo Morell and Jessica Backhaus. Aside from photography I
love doing anything outdoors like swimming, hiking and exploring. My favorite ice
cream flavor is black raspberry. I’m looking forward to working with GEV and meeting
everyone!

Hey, everybody! I'm Crystal Hope. I go to Hampshire, where I am studying
Creative Writing, Photography, and Education. I love taking spontaneous
portraits, writing poetry, and dressing up! I want to work with GEV Ware
because I love digital photography and I love working with people who have that
same interest. I enjoy making new friends and learning new things, as well as
teaching new things. And my favorite ice cream flavor? Death By Chocolate ALL
THE WAY. ;)
