Post from Crystal

Hello, girls! As I was browsing the web recently, I stumbled upon this great
artist. Her name is Mitsuko Nagone, and she is a photographer from Japan. She
does a lot of beautiful work. One project that she did is called "i am more
than my face." She did a series of 22 self-portraits, all with her face
completely covered. She used costumes and props and wigs to make herself seem
like a different person in each photo because you couldn't tell without seeing
seeing her face. She says,

"With this project, I intend to create myself, instead of finding my identity.
People often ask themselves, "Who am I?" However, this may take them away from
the truth. The definition of who they are could limit their own possibilities
and the infinity of their essences. I believe that the self should be created,
instead of being found. The self-portraits explore this instead since the face
is obscured. The human face seems to emphasize "who" a person is and gives some
insight about the individual. This may misinform the audience. I would like to
challenge the viewers' misconceptions and stereotypes."

What do you think about these portraits? Do you think they are more or less
powerful because we cannot see her face? How might you play around with the
idea of hiding someone's identity while taking their portrait?

Here is the link to her entire website to see more of her self-portraits and her
other photography! http://nagone.com/

YOUR ZINES!!!!!!

Amazing, amazing!

CLICK HERE to see them all!!!

Please Listen

For those of you who stayed late on Wednesday, we had a chance to talk about the tragic and unjust killing of 17 year old Trayvon Martin. We'll be discussing this further in the coming week, but in the meantime I think that this song relates to our discussions about racial injustice - especially towards young, black men and women.

If you'd like to learn more about the Trayvon Martin case, CLICK HERE to go to the New York Times archive of articles about him.

Two trailers to watch

We saw excerpts from both of these films when we were at Mass MoCA - both of them are about unfair labor conditions experienced by Latina women in Mexico and L.A. The first one "Maquilapolis" is about the horrible physical, mental and emotional conditions of factories in and around Tijuana and action taken by a group of women. The second one, "Made in L.A." is about women who work in sweatshops in LA (primarily for the store Forever21) who stage a protest that sparks into a much larger movement.

As you watch these two clips think about the following:
  • Who are "We, the People" in these films?
  • Who are the decision makers? Who has power?
  • Why are factories and sweatshops allowed to exist
  • How can these terrible conditions be changed?

A Poem by Gabriella Stephens

This is one of two poems that Gabby has written for the GEV Ware Blog.

Hearts
2/12/12

My heart being total ice
Sugar replaced with spice
I may know wrong from right
but what's better is the light
that shines through you
Your warmth makes me no longer blue
Your heart so big
makes my sile wide
and blush like a winter bride
and your bright eyes make me feel idolized
Your heart burning of a passionate fire
makes my heart melt
No longer ice it has finally retired
You set fire to my paper
no use for a stapler
because no need to cover it up
when it's real and now I'm a nut
Crazy for your love
like a beautiful dove
a double rainbow
and we intertwine
and now I am sugar no longer spice.

Blog Post From Anna!!!!!

Hey Girls! I hope you had a fun and photo filled snowday last week! I wanted to show you this really great photographer named Arlene Gottfried. She lives and works in New York City and is long-time friend of Ani (the guy who printed your photos for the LCYA show!) I think she takes really amazing photographs, especially of older women. What do you think about they way the elderly are represented in our society today? Do you think they are victims of any stereotypes or injustices. Although there is a generational gap, what do you think young people and older people have in common in terms of social justice issues? Some of these photos inspired me to take beautiful portraits of my elderly female role models. Who would you photograph in this way? How would you photograph someone in order to tell a story about them or to show something wonderful about them to others?

Thanks!

A Poll for you Ladies!!

Hey Gals - Some glorious friends of mine have started a brilliant organization called TESA (Toolbox for Education and Social Action) which promotes democracy in many locations: schools, businesses, homes etc... and works to bring light to many of the social justice issues we discuss in GEV Ware.

So, they have created an awesome game called Co-opoly  to help explain how cooperative organizations work and to explain things like loans, banks and certain hierarchies through an awesome game.

The question is do you all want to have a workshop with them to play the game ans talk about cooperatives?

If so, either leave a comment below or "like" this post on facebook.

Check out the links below too!

Hm, thoughts on layout etc....

Hey Gals - while I think for the most part this magazine promotes exactly the kind of advertising we have been trying to avoid... the layout is interesting. So, if you can skim over the objectification of female bodies, super skinnyness of the models, assumptions of a white and wealthy audience... what do you think about how the text and images are placed on the page?

Link HERE

Hmmm, but on a WAY MORE POSITIVE AND EMPOWERING side of things let's take a look at some of the interviews you all prepped in group.

This work is so beautiful.
