The Venus Project
Wow! Check it out. These images are from a project that an Italian artist named Anna Utopoa Giordano is working on. She takes beautiful old paintings of Venus, the Roman Goddess of Love (Aphrodite to the Greeks) and photoshops them to have the body proportions of current day models. What do you think? What does it make you think of current standards for body sizes versus historical ones?
HERE is the link to see more of her work!

Happy V-day You Great Gals!
Hey Gals - It was great seeing you and talking with you all yesterday. As always your poise and bravery and creativity inspire and impress me. To build upon our discussion about Valentines days from yesterday I thought I would share THIS link with you about it. It is for the V-Day website, a group that organizes to end violence again women and girls world-wide, and what better day to talk about this than today!?!
See you on Wednesday. Remember to all make some portraits, think about independent project ideas and bring your cameras in on Wednesday!

The picture I haven chosen is the one I took while back
where I had taken a picture of Boston’s state house. Where it was the time I
was on a field trip in the 6th grade. Where I had taken the picture
I made sure that the picture had great lighting in the back round and the state
house would stand out. While I was taking the picture I was thinking that I
couldn’t wait to go inside and take a tour of the whole building. But that day
was amazing because I didn’t just tour the state house I got to do a lot as well
around Boston. So I learned as well that when you take a picture you have to
make sure the picture has enough meaning to you as to when you or someone else
looks at it later on like I have so you can say that I took that, which is a
proud feeling to have after you have taken a picture.

In this picture you are looking at an angel of my room
looking at Christmas lights. They are a dying out yellow. This to me shows
light with in the heart. This shows that the light is very peaceful and calm. I
love to read a book and relax in my bed right before I go to sleep. There is
like a softness in the photo where the light is shining I turned my flash of
and there it is I got the softness in the photo. I love to take pictures of
light and nature and of course family so this tied in very well. This photo is
called “Lights In The Sky.”

Reminder : Weekend Task!
Hey Ladies -
So, for Monday if you could all bring in:
1 photograph that you think show a positive portrayal of a woman (in whatever regard you want, her body, her mind, her decision-making, her self -esteem etc...)
and
1 photo that you think is objectifying of a woman - something that turns her into an object and not a person.
For both of these you ca bring in photos you've found or that you've taken.
Here are some examples.

I love how calm and strong Mary J. Blige looks in this photo by Annie Leibovtiz. She looks confident in herself and I feel good looking at and relating to this image. HERE is the link. |
I am unimpressed by this image and by the way the woman's legs are the only part of her visible. She actually becomes "baggage" in this advertisement. HERE is the link. |

Hey, ladies. Remember when we told you about H&M and their fake models? Well,
here's the screenshot from the blog I saw. You can see more by clicking the
link below. Think about what this means, for both the consumer and the model.
What does it say about H&M's expectations that they don't use a regular
mannequin, but a photoshopped one, or that they'll use only a model's face but
not her body? How would you feel if someone took one part of you and used it in
this way?
Here's the H&M article:
