Photographer Bruce Myren
-->
Hey girls!
I wanted to share with you my experience of working with
photographer Bruce Myren. He was actually a photo professor of mine last year
when I took a photography class at Amherst College. He made me think about
photography more than an art than I ever have before. He made us question
everything we did…but in a GOOD way. “Why did you take a picture of that? But
WHY?” He made photographing more than just taking a photo.
In his work, Bruce investigates issues of place and space.
Every photograph is thought out and executed to perfection. One project of his
that I am inspired by is called “Markers: Memory”. In this project, Bruce went back to Amherst,
MA, the town he grew up in, to make pictures of places and spaces that he had a
special memory of. He accompanies each photograph with one phrase.
How do you think you would photograph a space? What spaces
are important to you that are worth sharing? http://www.brucemyren.com/

Alexandra Baran - 17 Year Old Photographer
Hey, check out these picture by an awesome youth photographer! Alexandra
Baran is just 17 years old and already has a bunch of photo experience
under her belt. She started photography in 8th grade (just like some of
you all!) and has since won several contests and awards, including a
National Art Honor Society award. She's had her work in two of the
Drexel University "High School Photography" exhibitions (which you all
can enter in high school too!) and was featured in a magazine called
"Emerging Photographer."
She does a lot of really conceptual studio portrait photography, often depicting issues that are close to her heart, such as depression and human trafficking.
Just think, this could be any of you lovely ladies in just a matter of time!!!
Here are two of the pieces that were featured in her article in "Emerging Photographer!"

Post Secret
So ladies - there's this thing called post secret and... we're going to be writing our own secrets and sending them in.
Basically, people write secrets and mail them into a fellow who posts them online. Some of the greatest secrets (I think) are ones about random acts of kindness, the ways that people help each other out and ones about identity.
Why do you think people have secrets? Why do you think people can share them anonymously to the world but not in person to those they know?

Photographer Helen Van Meene
Hey girls!
Helen van Meene is a Dutch photographer. I was originally
taken with her photos because she chooses to only photograph girls and women
(which I thought was appropriate for GEV!). Her subjects either already know
her or are people she befriends. Sometimes she chooses to photograph them
repeatedly, documenting their growth. She does not create candid shots- it is
very clear that their poses are carefully planned and executed. Helen van Meene
plays around with a sort of muted light and a lot of the younger girls she
photograph seem sad or emotionally contained. What do you think she is trying
to convey?

Post From Anna
Hey ladies,
I thought you might be interested in the work of photographer Nikki Lee. She's a contemporary Korean American photographer. For her projects she submerges herself into a "subculture" or group of people that she might not normally identify with and changes her identity to become a part of that group. For example, she dresses up as an elderly woman and plays the part so well, that she makes friends in the elderly community, making it her life for the time of her project. Some people could say it's a way of "walking in someone else's shoes". What do you think this says about her identity and identities of groups or communities in general? Do you think it's awesome that she does this or could it be problematic in stereotyping certain groups of people? Does it remind you of Cindy Sherman's work at all? How is it similar or different?

Eadweard Muybridge: Post from Anna
Hey ladies,
Considering we did some stop motion photo work ourselves recently, I figured it would good for you to see the work of the guy who sort of discovered this technique. Eadweard Muybridge used photography to try and answer some questions about the way the human body (and animal bodies) moved. He took a series of photographs of people or animals repeating a certain motion, like walking, dancing, horses running, etc. to see how the body moved scientifically. This was really significant in photography and in science! Do you think you could discover something by taking stop motion photographs? How do they compare to the work we made last week? Can you think of something similar we could do with all the technology we have today?
See you tomorrow!

A Post From Anna
Hello Ladies!
I thought It'd share with you some photographs by photographer Ruth Orkin. I was just working restoring and reproducing an original print of hers at my other job at the gallery. I thought you all would really like the photo of the woman walking through the street in Italy. The model in this photo was a friend Orkin met while traveling in Italy and they collaborated to create scenes of what it was like for an American woman living in Italy. How do you think she feels in the image? Keep in mind this was taken in the 1950's. Do you think a similar scene would happen today? This photo is probably her most famous. It's considered "iconic" in American photography. How does it compare to some other iconic photographs we've looked at? Take a look at her other work too. What do you think of while looking at her work? I hope you like these!
